About the Board

The Primary English Teaching Association Australia (PETAA) is a not-for-profit national professional teaching association. The association was incorporated in 1982.

PETAA is governed by a Board of Directors, who determine the organisation’s strategic direction and to whom the General Manager and operations team report.

Directors are elected from the membership at the Annual General Meeting in accordance with the Constitution. The Board comprises:

  • President
  • Two Vice Presidents
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Two other Directors.

The term of office is normally two years. From time to time Board appointments are made to fill a vacancy.

Nigel Pearn portrait

Nigel Pearn, BA (Hons), MTeach (Hons)  
President  

Nigel is currently working for the Qld. Department of Education and Training as a writer with the Curriculum into the Classroom (C2C) English team. He is interested in all aspects of students' love of literature and growth in literacy but has particular professional interests in: school-level program evaluation and educational measurement; the interface between arts practices and literacy; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education, building school/university partnerships, and the policy and practice of teacher professional learning. Nigel is a regular reviewer of children's picture books and young adult fiction for the Australian Book Review.

Over the last 12 years Des has focused on resolving complex and diverse business problems.

Des’s background spans a broad range of industries and includes strategic, operational and analytical projects. This international hands-on experience has been gained across corporate, consulting and entrepreneurial endeavours delivering impact for a diverse range of clients.

Joanne Rossbridge portrait

Joanne Rossbridge, Dip Ed, BEd (TESOL), MEd (TESOL)
Vice President, Professional Learning and Publications; Secretary

Joanne is an independent literacy consultant working in both primary and secondary schools and classrooms with teachers across Sydney. She has worked as a classroom and ESL teacher and literacy consultant with the NSW DET. Much of her experience has involved working with students from non-English speaking backgrounds.

Joanne has also worked casually for the University of Sydney and the University of Western Sydney with both literacy and TESOL education students. Currently she is teaching at the Australian Catholic University at Strathfield.

Joanne is particularly interested in student and teacher talk and how talk about language can assist the development of language and literacy skills.

Robyn Cox portrait

Robyn Cox, PhD, M St Ed, Grad Dip Ed Stud, Dip Teaching
Director, National Advisory Council

Robyn is currently Associate Professor of Literacy Education at ACU National, Strathfield campus. Prior to this she was Principal Lecturer at the University of Worcester, UK and a member of the executive committee of the United Kingdom Literacy Association (UKLA).

Robyn has also held positions at Universities in Australia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam. She is the author of several international journal articles in the field of literacy research and has been involved in teacher education in four countries over a 20 year period.

Robyn is well known for her commitment to the development of a strong professional knowledge base in initial teacher education and remains dedicated to bringing accessible educational research and theory to teacher education students. Robyn’s interest also lies in teacher professional development.

Ian Hardy portrait

Ian Hardy, BA, Grad Dip Ed, MEd, PhD QLD
Director

Ian Hardy is Lecturer in Educational Studies at the School of Education, University of Queensland, Australia. Ian has a particular interest in teachers’ learning, in all its complexity. While much has been written about the importance of teachers’ learning, and particular approaches advocated, the variety and variability of actual learning practices invite further attention. Ian’s work explores the nature of educational policy and politics as these relate to teachers’ learning, and how they influence practice.

Ian has also published in the areas of educational leadership, higher education and initial teacher education. Ian has a forthcoming (2012) book with Routledge entitled The Politics of Teacher Professional Development: Policy, Research and Practice.

Tracy Considine portrait

Tracy Considine,
Director

Tracy Considine is currently Deputy Principal of Beverly Hills North Public School, a large primary school located in south western Sydney.

An employee of the Department of Education and Communities for nearly 20 years, Tracy has worked across numerous primary and secondary schools in a variety of roles including classroom teacher, assistant principal, K-12 Information and Communication Technologies curriculum consultant, relieving literacy consultant K-8 and deputy principal in a National Partnerships school with a high proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

Working at the coalface of primary teaching and learning, and with experience in a range of settings, Tracy brings a school-based perspective and voice to the Board.

Jane Young, BAcc, CA, Grad Dip (Applied Finance and Investment)
Director

Jane Young will graduate from the Sydney University Master of Teaching course in March 2013.

Jane is a Chartered Accountant with over twenty years experience as an audit manager, business analyst and information technology project manager. She has professional experience across a wide range of industries, including the design and implementation of integrated financial systems for the NSW Department of Education and Communities.
