Notice of Annual General Meeting 2018

Notice is hereby given that the Primary English Teaching Association Australia (PETAA) will hold its 2018 Annual General Meeting on Saturday 26 May 2018, commencing at 10am. The meeting will be held in the PETAA Meeting Room In the grounds of Camdenville Public School Laura Street, Newtown, NSW 2042.

Program for the day

  • 9.30am — Venue opens and registration
  • Refreshments provided on arrival (morning tea will also be served)
  • 10.00am — Annual General Meeting (likely to conclude by 10.45am)
  • 11.00am — Building communities of learning in schools, presentation

AGM Agenda

  1. Presentation of PETAA’s Annual Report 2017 inclusive of financial reports
  2. Presentation of minutes of the PETAA AGM 2017
  3. Election of Directors. There will be resolutions to fill the three vacancies on the PETAA Board with the three nominations received. Details adjacent and below.
  4. Other Business. Hear more about how PETAA operates and its plans for the future, while also providing members an opportunity to raise questions of the PETAA Board and General Manager.

Penny Hutton is PETAA’s valued Professional Learning and Publications Consultant and one of our core Presenters. Penny will demonstrate PETAA’s new model of Professional Learning through sequenced, packaged presentations and PETAA resources in schools, and discuss the power of building a community of learning within schools. Explanatory notes

Item 1. Annual reports

The PETAA Annual Report 2018 will be presented to the meeting. The report includes the financial report, the Directors’ report and the Auditor’s report. Members can download the report below. As permitted by law, a printed copy of the Annual Report has been sent only to those Members who have elected to receive a printed copy.

Item 3. Election of directors

For the 2018 Election there are three vacancies to be filled. Two of these vacancies are due to Directors standing down from the Board and the other vacancy is due to a position becoming vacant as the incumbent retires in accordance with rule 30 a), and being eligible is standing for re-election. We acknowledge receipt of three (only) nominations for the Board of Directors in 2018. The nominations received fulfil the requirement stipulated at rule 26 c) of the Constitution — of the Member Directors not more than four can have an address in the Register in the same State/Territory.


A Member who is entitled to attend and vote at this meeting is entitled to appoint a proxy to attend and vote instead of the Member. To be effective, Proxy Forms (completed and signed) must be received by PETAA at the address given on the Proxy Form by no later than 10.00AM AEST on Thursday 24 May 2018.

Nominations for three vacant positions

Robyn Cox is President of PETAA and has held positions at Universities in Australia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam. She is the author of several international journal articles in the field of literacy research and has been involved in teacher education in four countries over a 20 year period. Robyn is well known for her commitment to the development of a strong professional knowledge base in initial teacher education and remains dedicated to bringing accessible educational research and theory to teacher education students.

Pauline Jones has over 20 years' experience as a tertiary teacher educator specialising in language and literacy research, curriculum and pedagogy. Having completed her PhD on oral language in 2005, Dr Jones' current research is in the use of student generated multimodal texts in Science, and language and literacy transitions across schooling years. Dr Jones has written extensively for teachers (in- and pre-service) in language and literacy and most recently completed co-editing of a book on dialogue in teaching and professional learning for the PETAA book — Talking the Talk.

Bronwyn Parkin has 30 years' experience in supporting language and literacy teachers beginning in Aboriginal Education, remote and metropolitan through the South Australia Accelerated Literacy program focused on disadvantaged schools; through the recent PETAA research grants investigating academic language pedagogy with educationally marginalised students; and as a consultant working in disadvantaged contexts. Dr Parkin has been a member of the Literacy Education Advisory Committee of South Australian Department of Education.
