PP208: The literacy of mathematicsPP208: The literacy of mathematics
In this PETAA paper we explore some interrelationships between learning mathematics and literacy development. The importance of developing mathematical vocabulary and the comprehension of written problems has been well established. So, we have chosen instead to explore the less obvious ways in which literacy and mathematical activity are inter-twined. We focus on how teachers can support students to create, use and interpret representations of mathematics concepts, utilising a variety of verbal, visual, gestural and multimodal ´texts’.
