This course is free for NSW teachers who teach at a school participating in the 2024 NSW Premier's Spelling Bee, of which PETAA is a proud supporter.
What is this course about?
In this PETAA course, created by Bronwyn Parkin and Helen Harper, we delve into the transformative power of spelling proficiency. By mastering spelling, teachers can help students avoid cognitive overload, reducing the risk of disengagement with writing as tasks become more complex. Don't let spelling hold your students back. Equip yourself with the tools to empower your students to become confident, skilled writers.
This course covers the following content along with practical examples of spelling lessons to support writing:
- Module 1: What we need to know about spelling (developmental stages, prerequisites for teaching spelling effectively, knowledge used by competent spellers, spelling in the Australian curriculum/NSW syllabus)
- Module 2: Teaching process for early spellers
- Module 3: Teaching process for competent spellers
- Module 4: Setting learning goals for spelling and formative assessment
Learning outcomes:
- Embed the teaching of decoding/encoding within meaningful texts.
- Explore strategies to enhance automaticity and fluency in spelling.
- Learn how to integrate spelling practice into everyday teaching seamlessly.
- Learn practical strategies to enhance automaticity and fluency in spelling, ensuring that students can focus on meaning making rather than worrying about spelling.
- Empower students to become more confident and engaged writers.

How does it work?
- Individuals: upon registration individuals will be sent a link to access the PL on our online learning platform.
- Group Booking: Schools wishing to enrol a group of staff (please do - engage all your staff in a professional learning community of practice!) can email us the names, job titles and emails of the teachers you'd like enrolled and we'll do the hard work for you!
