Exploring how texts work in HASS: geography and history

Presented by Bronwyn Custance and Tony Hole. What are the core text types reflected in the Australian Curriculum; HASS: Geography and History and how do we support our learners in reading and writing texts to successfully construct and represent their learning?

This workshop explores core texts in HASS: both Geography and History, with their specific structures and language features. It explores how teachers can use model texts within a teaching and learning cycle to build deep content knowledge and control of important language within texts.

This is  a two-day workshop, with three weeks in between each session. Teachers are supported to plan language-focused literacy strategies using a core-text for a HASS topic they are currently teaching. They will try out the teaching plan and regather for reflection and more learning on the second day. On this second day they will be supported to plan language-focused teaching using a teaching and learning cycle on a science topic of their choosing.
