National Poetry Month

Inspire curiosity, language and creativity through poetry that invites students to read deeply, think critically and write with purpose.

This curated collection brings together PETAA curriculum units, professional learning, webinars, papers and teaching resources that support curriculum-aligned classroom opportunities to teach and learn through poetry, verse novels, rhythm and rhyme.

Beyond poetry month

Australia's National Poetry Month provides an opportunity to celebrate poetry, language and creativity in classrooms and communities. While August offers a timely moment to place poetry in the spotlight, rich poems and verse texts deserve a place in English teaching throughout the year.

The resources in this collection demonstrate the many ways poetry can support literacy learning. From rhyme, rhythm and oral language in the early years to figurative language, imagery, verse novels, reading comprehension and purposeful writing in the upper primary years, poetry provides authentic opportunities for students to explore how language works and how meaning is created.

Whether your focus is selecting quality mentor texts, building vocabulary, teaching language choices, developing confident readers and writers or inspiring students to create their own poems, these resources provide practical entry points for teaching English through poetry across the primary years.
