Making sense of written text is the purpose of reading. Yet reading comprehension, particularly the ability of students to infer, is an ongoing concern for many teachers. This workshop covers approaches to reading comprehension, including comprehension strategies, text analysis, close reading, questioning and the implications these have for the classroom.
Why participate?
Teachers will be using CBCA nominated book, Runt by Craig Silvey, to explore the 10 essential elements of effective reading comprehension instruction that research suggests every teacher should engage in, including the following:
- Illustrations
- Text structure
- Literary devices
- Vocabulary
Participants will:
- Learn how to identify important meanings in texts
- Delve into 'close reading', important pedagogy for comprehension
- Examine the importance of reading comprehension for writing success
