Online: Play-based language and literacy learning
Presented and moderated by Dr Margery Hertzberg and Dr Leonie Arthur. Play-based learning is seeing a resurgence in the classroom and is especially beneficial with literacy and language learning. This practical course will provide teachers with a range of strategies to plan for, scaffold and assess play-based language and literacy learning.
Practical strategies include language and literacy-enriched dramatic play, readers’ theatre, puppetry, story re-enactment and the creative arts. The role of teachers in advocating for play-based learning with families and the broader community is also addressed.
Who should participate?
- K–2 classroom teachers
- Classroom teachers in early childhood education, pre-schools and care settings
- EAL/D teachers with students across the primary grades.
This course is self-paced.
Please note: this course is available from 8/11/2021 to 6/12/2021. Extensions for Online: Play-based language and literacy learning cannot be granted unless under exceptional circumstances at PETAA’s discretion.
Cost of participation:
Completing this course will contribute 3 hours of online PL addressing 1.2.2, 2.1.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
For NSW teachers: Completing Play-based language and literacy learning will contribute 3 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Accredited PD in the priority area of Delivery and assessment of NSW Curriculum/Early Years Learning Framework addressing standard descriptors 1.2.2, 2.1.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
