The Teaching of Phonics: Explicit, systematic and purposeful

The Teaching of Phonics: Explicit, systematic and purposeful
Presented by Dr KATHERINE BATES
Participants will take away research based knowledge about teaching phonemic, phonological and graphological skills, along with strategies that contribute to developing their own teaching methods repertoire that is explicit, contextual and embedded in a literacy block.
In this 5-hour course, participants will:
*Explore theoretical underpinnings and approaches for teaching phonics from phonemic and phonological awareness (hearing and articulating the smallest speech sounds and then sound combinations), through to graphological awareness (the alphabetic principle).
* Map associated skills with the English K-6 Syllabus Outcomes and the ACARA literacy learning progression (ACARA, 2018).
* View and engage with a range of explicit phonic strategies.
* Analyse a range of literature for applying phonic strategies in context.
* Examine a recent running record assessment data set from their classroom to identify most significant phonological needs.
* Review and select multimodal resources
