Building life long readers: Put pleasure back into reading

Building life long readers: Put pleasure back into reading
BUILDING LIFE LONG READERS: PUTTING PLEASURE BACK INTO READING
PRESENTED by HELEN ADAM
In many classrooms today teacher read alouds and independent reading time for children have all but disappeared (ACER, 2011). Furthermore, in some schools children are now told what they are allowed to select themselves from classroom or school libraries with limits being placed according to Lexiles and test results. Teachers cite uncertainty of the value of reading for pleasure, pressure of a crowded curriculum, pressure to teach to standardised tests, confusion over when and why to use levelled texts or child selected texts, and management of reluctant readers as some of the reasons these strategies are missing in their classrooms. Numerous studies show the positive academic, intellectual, personal and social emotional benefits of children reading books and being read books they have selected themselves (Krashen 2004; OECD, 2011; Merga, 2016).
Evidence consistently shows that children who read for pleasure outperform their peers who don't by up to 18 months of academic achievement across all learning areas. (OECD 2011). By the end of this workshop teachers will have a tool kit of simple strategies to address all strands of the English curriculum. They will undertake assessment and evaluation of children's reading and the literature strand, engage reluctant readers, help make children accountable for their personal reading and put pleasure back into book time with children.
