Multilingual Storyboxes in the Early Childhood Classroom

Multilingual Storyboxes in the Early Childhood Classroom
For Teachers K-2
Presented by Kim Cootes and Dr Gill Pennington
During this workshop, teachers will be introduced to significant aspects of EAL/D pedagogy and the value of stories as vehicles for language and literacy development, especially when accompanied by opportunities to respond playfully to multilingual texts. Reference will be made to appropriate curriculum outcomes. The purpose of ´multilingual storyboxes’ will then be explored: to value and explore the diversity of languages spoken in the school community, and to allow students to draw on their linguistic resources to develop oral language and literacy skills in English. Sample boxes illustrate the selection of contents, which include a core text written in English and home language(s), as well as related toys, craft materials, dress-up costumes and online resources to support and extend students’ understanding through use of English and their home languages. Exploration of a range of narratives is also valuable for monolingual students, encouraging cross-cultural perspectives.
