Part 3: Building Substantive Communication to Support EAL/D Students

Supporting EAL/D students in our classrooms is a three-part course designed to address the contributions and educational needs of diverse EAL/D students in Australian schools, including those who have recently arrived and who may be from refugee backgrounds. Drawing upon principles and practices of EAL/D pedagogy to support mainstream and EAL/D teachers in planning and implementing programs that meet the needs of EAL/D students in mainstream classes, teachers will learn how to identify specific teaching and learning practices that can best support the educational development of their EAL/D students.

Why participate?

This course is the third of three which can be completed separately or in sequence. 

Part 3: Building Substantive Communication to Support EAL/D Students highlights the importance for EAL/D students of talk in learning, and the role of language in mediating learning. It also addresses the need for EAL/D students in mainstream programs to be supported to learn academic English. Part 3 has three areas of purpose: 

• Address the contributions and educational needs of diverse EAL/D students in Australian schools, including those who have recently arrived and who may be from refugee backgrounds.
• Draw on principles and practices of EAL/D pedagogy to support mainstream and EAL/D teachers in planning and implementing programs that meet the needs of EAL/D students in mainstream classes.
• Identify specific teaching and learning practices that can best support the educational development of EAL/D students, including recently arrived students, in mainstream classes.

• Teachers - Years F-6
• Teachers of EAL/D students, including New Arrivals

How does it work?

• Individuals: upon registration individuals will be sent a link to access the PL on our online learning platform.
• Whole schools: one staff member must register on behalf of their school.
  They can choose to have a single link to view this together or can email us the names and email addresses of teachers they wish to enrol.

Completing this course contributes to 4 hours of online Professional Learning addressing 1.3.2 and 1.5.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

 

This course is NESA Accredited For NSW teachers: Completing Supporting EAL/D students in our classrooms Part 3: Building substantive communication to support EAL/D students will contribute 4 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Accredited PD in the priority area of Delivery and assessment of NSW Curriculum/Early Years Learning Framework addressing standard descriptors 1.3.2 and 1.5.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
