The role of quality literature and literacy outcomes in process drama

Dr John Nicholas Saunders is the Director of Education and Community Partnership at Sydney Theatre Company. His  PhD explored the impact of drama-based pedagogy on English and literacy learning. In this short video, he outlines a plan for exploring Margaret Wild's popular picture book Fox using the episodic pre-text model of drama. He also describes how this plan can be adapted for online and remote learning.

Key Messages

  1. The episodic pre-text model incorporates a range of dramatic strategies and activities which can be tied to particular learning outcomes
  2. This 7 week lesson plan best supports a rich quality text that contains a central dilemma and can be re-read many times
  3. Drama strategies can be explored in-person or online and remotely; they are flexible and open strategies that encourage various forms of student engagement
