Planning for Scientific Language with EAL/D students

Bronwyn Parkin

12 hours

Available 15 April - 20 June 2024

Online moderated course

What is this course about?

This course is designed to help teachers make the language of science explicit to all students, particularly EAL/D learners, empowering them to speak and write authoritatively while engaging with new scientific ideas. We recognise the challenges EAL/D students face in mastering academic language, and this course will support teachers in ensuring all students can express themselves with confidence and authority.

Course format:

This course is available on-demand via PETAA's LMS for the time period Monday 15 April - Thursday 20 June. In addition, Bronwyn will be running two optional live Teams sessions:

  1. Monday 15 April at 4pm AEST
  2. Monday 10 June 4pm AEST

Learning Outcomes:

  • Scaffold language learning for EAL/D students to build their confidence and proficiency
  • Integrate language development with scientific curriculum content, making learning meaningful and engaging
  • Create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment where all students can succeed
  • Plan a sequence of lessons around one topic, using a focus text as a guide
  • Think up front about the language, both vocabulary and grammar that you want to teach, and the language you want students to use
  • Gradually shift from hands-on activities to letting the language do the work of meaning-making
  • Discover practical and effective ways to unlock the language of science for EAL/D students, empowering them to thrive in the literacy and science classroom and beyond
