The craft of writing: attentive teaching with mentor texts

The craft of writing: attentive teaching with mentor texts
An ONLINE course presented and moderated by Dr Lorraine McDonald, for teachers of students K–10. This course demonstrates how students can be guided to ‘actively notice’ how quality texts are constructed and how to follow these mentor texts to make relevant choices for their own writing purposes. Participants will apply explicit language/grammatical knowledge to closely observe how readers are engaged, how the texts are cohesive and how writers introduce the topic/orientation. With support, students can develop knowledge about how language/grammar works to construct meaning, how sentence fluency can be achieved, and how personal connections and critical comprehension may be accomplished. Excerpts from several recent CBCA award winning texts (both fiction and non-fiction) are our mentor models.
